The first establishing shots of the film see a city environment, dominated by skyscrapers, neon lights and advertisements. The overall lighting of the city captures the film noir-esque spin on the genre, low-key, mysterious and sinister. This is further reinforced by the smoky streets and rain, projecting a negative, downbeat mood. The city is very technologically advanced, and despite the negative, melancholy tones portrayed, the streets buzz with the different modes of transportation travelling in various directions. As the film progresses further we are taken in from the city landscape and delve deep into the streets, where we can see the environment from the perspective of the inhabitants. We see the population and the way they live in the city, being given an insight into the way they live, assisted by all of the technology around them.
